Chapter Eight

“I trust you’ve heard this band before?” Poppy asked Slade as they exited the town limits of Plux in his fancy car.

“I have. Many times in fact. Jace’s brother is one of the members.”

“Nice.”

She had asked him to fly her to Kellsport, but he said he used the large field near the center of town to land. Tonight, that field was being used as the concert venue, so they would have to drive. That worked for her. The thirty-minute trip would give them plenty of time to chat, and there would be other opportunities to fly with him.

“Do you play any instruments?” she asked.

Slade laughed. “Ah, no. I was quite good at sports though. You?”

“My talents are all in my hands.” And in my mind.

“I do love your hands.” He grinned.

“Thank you.”

To keep her thoughts off of sex for as long as possible, Poppy studied the landscape. The sun had just set, illuminating the beautiful mountain ranges, convincing her driving had been the better choice.

Trees sped by, dotted with large open spaces, creating a magical piece of art. Just as they were about to crest one of the mountains, an amazing idea popped into her head. “Oh, my goddess.” Poppy lightly touched his shoulder. “I’ve got it!”

Slade looked over at her. “What is it?”

“I just figured out how Conrad Hotels can build their hotel, and Carolyn doesn’t have to lose her diner.”

“Really?”

As if Slade had a sixth sense that something bad might happen, he jerked his gaze back to the road. “What the fuck!” His hands clutched the wheel, and his body tensed.

Poppy twisted toward the front as bright lights nearly blinded her. A large truck was barreling toward them—and it was on their side of the road!

Slade honked, and with little time to react, he jerked the wheel to the left into the oncoming lane to avoid a head-on collision with the massive vehicle. Just as she thought they’d escape certain destruction, the front end of the truck clipped the rear of the passenger side of their car, spinning them out of control.

Next thing she knew, they were airborne, the front tires clipping the guardrail. The impact flipped the car. The roof of their vehicle collided with what must have been a large boulder. Metal scraped and then crunched. She could almost feel the air being sucked out of her space. The roof smashed in so much that her face was inches from the dash. Hanging upside down, the car slid, twisted, and tumbled down the mountainside. Pain shot through her shoulders and chest, and a huge weight pressed down on her legs, pinning them under the engine. What seemed like a lifetime later, the car jerked to an abrupt stop.

Then all went black.
